Vacuum Casting Tolerances & Standards

We apply ISO 2768-m (Medium) as our standard tolerance for silicone-molded parts — balancing surface detail with the natural shrinkage of polyurethane resins. On most molded features, our tooling consistently holds tolerances within the Medium grade limits. Typical cast parts range from ±0.1mm on small features to ±0.5mm on larger or softer geometries. If your design includes critical datum points or metal inserts, mark those requirements clearly on the 2D drawing. We will adjust the master pattern and mold design accordingly. For features requiring tighter control, we can apply additional post-processing or CNC finishing upon request. Note that silicone molds are subject to gradual wear, which may affect tolerance over the life of the mold — we monitor this closely and advise when replacement is needed.
Basic Size Range (mm) Fine (ISO 2768-f) Medium (ISO 2768-m) Coarse (ISO 2768-c) Very Coarse (ISO 2768-v)
0.5 up to 3 ± 0.05mm ± 0.1mm ± 0.2mm
over 3 up to 6 ± 0.05mm ± 0.1mm ± 0.3mm ± 0.5mm
over 6 up to 30 ± 0.1mm ± 0.2mm ± 0.5mm ± 1mm
over 30 up to 120 ± 0.15mm ± 0.3mm ± 0.8mm ± 1.5mm
over 120 up to 400 ± 0.2mm ± 0.5mm ± 1.2mm ± 2.5mm
over 400 up to 1000 ± 0.3mm ± 0.8mm ± 2mm ± 4mm
over 1000 up to 2000 ± 0.5mm ± 1.2mm ± 3mm ± 6mm
over 2000 up to 4000 ± 2mm ± 4mm ± 8mm

Vacuum Casting FAQs

How do I start a vacuum casting project?

Send your CAD files, material requirements, quantity, and surface finish expectations. Our team will review your design and recommend the best approach.

Can vacuum casting replace injection molding?

Vacuum casting is ideal for prototypes and low-volume production. For high-volume manufacturing, injection molding is usually the more suitable solution.

How many parts can one silicone mold produce?

A silicone mold typically supports multiple prototype parts, with the exact quantity depending on part design, material, and production requirements.

What is the lead time for vacuum casting?

Vacuum casting parts can typically be completed in about 3 days, depending on mold complexity, quantity, and finishing requirements.

What finishes are available for vacuum cast parts?

Options include mold finishes, matte surfaces, polishing, painting, textures, and custom cosmetic finishes.

What accuracy can vacuum casting achieve?

Typical accuracy depends on part size, geometry, material shrinkage, and mold design. Critical dimensions should be reviewed during the design stage.

What materials are available for vacuum casting?

We use polyurethane casting materials with different properties, including rigid, flexible, transparent, and heat-resistant options.

What is vacuum casting used for?

Vacuum casting is commonly used for functional prototypes, product validation, and low-volume production parts requiring production-like materials and finishes.
