Mold Making Across Industries

Precision mold making supports every stage of plastic part manufacturing, from prototype tooling to production molds built for consistent, repeatable results.

Mold Making Tolerances & Standards

Precision mold tooling requires tighter control. We machine steel and aluminum mold bases, cavities, and inserts to ISO 2768-f (Fine) as our standard — ensuring reliable injection molding performance and consistent part quality. On standard mold plates and inserts, our precision milling holds tolerances from ±0.005mm to ±0.01mm for critical features. For complex multi-slide tooling or fine inserts, provide a detailed 2D print with GD&T callouts. We will design and machine the tooling to those exact specifications. Important note: The tolerances listed above refer to the mold tooling itself, not the final molded plastic parts. Injection-molded part tolerances depend on material shrinkage, part geometry, and processing conditions — typically ranging from ±0.05mm to ±0.5mm. We review each project individually and provide recommended part tolerances based on your material and design.
Basic Size Range (mm) Fine (ISO 2768-f) Medium (ISO 2768-m) Coarse (ISO 2768-c) Very Coarse (ISO 2768-v)
0.5 up to 3 ± 0.05mm ± 0.1mm ± 0.2mm
over 3 up to 6 ± 0.05mm ± 0.1mm ± 0.3mm ± 0.5mm
over 6 up to 30 ± 0.1mm ± 0.2mm ± 0.5mm ± 1mm
over 30 up to 120 ± 0.15mm ± 0.3mm ± 0.8mm ± 1.5mm
over 120 up to 400 ± 0.2mm ± 0.5mm ± 1.2mm ± 2.5mm
over 400 up to 1000 ± 0.3mm ± 0.8mm ± 2mm ± 4mm
over 1000 up to 2000 ± 0.5mm ± 1.2mm ± 3mm ± 6mm
over 2000 up to 4000 ± 2mm ± 4mm ± 8mm

Mold Making FAQs

What information is needed for a mold quote?

Please provide 3D CAD files, part drawings, material requirements, production quantity, and expected mold life. Our engineers will review the design and recommend a suitable tooling solution.

How do you ensure mold quality?

We inspect mold dimensions, cavity accuracy, assembly fit, and surface finish throughout the manufacturing process to ensure stable molding performance.

Can you make both prototype molds and production molds?

Yes. We manufacture prototype tooling for design validation as well as production molds designed for repeatable long-term manufacturing.

How long does it take to make a mold?

The typical machining and manufacturing time for a mold ranges from 20 to 30 days, depending on the mold's complexity, cavity structure, material selection, and finishing requirements. (This timeframe refers specifically to the mold manufacturing process itself.)

What surface finishes are available for molds?

Mold finishes include polishing, mirror finishing, EDM texturing, sandblasting, and surface treatments to achieve specific part appearance and molding performance.

What tolerance can mold making achieve?

Mold accuracy depends on design complexity, material selection, and machining requirements. Critical mold features can be manufactured to tight tolerances with precision machining and inspection.

What materials are used for mold making?

Common mold materials include P20, 718H, NAK80, S136, H13, and other tool steels. Aluminum molds are also available for prototype tooling and low-volume production.
